Nevada Northern Railway Machine Shop & Engine House
We recently paid a visit to the @nevadanorthernrailway8416 in Ely, Nevada. Before catching our train ride we took a walk through their machine shop and engine house. It's open to the public so everything can walk through and enjoy seeing them. The preservation the organization has done to every aspect of the railway is simply amazing! All of the original machinery, equipment, tools, buildings train cars and locomotives were saved and preserved. They are always working on restorations and hope to eventually have many of the cars and engines rebuilt and put back into service. Take a peek inside the working machine shop and engine house with us.

Aluminum Standoffs Machined in the CNC Lathe

I machined a small batch of aluminum parts using our @MilltronicsUSAInc ML16 cnc lathe. This was the first time using some drilling tools as well as a new Tungaloy parting blade. This job allowed me to get some more Fusion 360 training and practice running a part I would have more commonly machined using all manual machines. Hardtail Vise Ep. 22: Internal Shaping to Fit Dynamic Jaw

As we get to the final machining needed for our Hardtail vise, we'll get the inside area of the fixed jaw body machined to fit the dynamic jaw. For this I will be using the G&E shaper and a 12" long bar I made to cut the four corners that hold the dynamic jaw in the center. This was no simple task by any means but it was a great challenge to work on and I am excited to share this with everyone....

Did you get back to the steam plant and blacksmith's shop in the back room? If they fixed the boilers there they could steam power the line shaft equipment but an electric motor would be easier. So much to see there you need a few days. Glad you made it there.

When the compound is in the most forward position, The ball bearing is exposed to the atmosphere. These bearings should be double sealed double sheilded . They would last forever.

Consider using a VCMT/VNMG insert to turn, it'll allow you to turn down that 45° angle, much more efficient than using that parting blade. Maybe drill thru with the letter F drill to eliminate the cutoff tit? Don't know if that would be acceptable for the part application. ER collets are how we hold 95% of our drills, taps, reamers, endmills.

I find it interesting that in a shop with several people working and a myriad of serious macines and tools, that no one was working those machines. Yet from the sounds, it was obvious there was some serious toil taking place. A lot of blood, sweat, and tears taking place in a real world, old school, let's get'er done, shop.

I'm not disagreeing with you since this is something I've just learned recently from a couple of other videos (and yours) about the die difference. That said, I have, on several occasions, cut threads in solid rod using hex dies only. Luck of fools I suppose, but I've not had any problems with it. I just went slow and used a lot of oil. I even have a video which will be coming out soon on a 5/8" I just cut with just a hex die and a big a$$ wrench. However, because of your (and the other) videos, I went ahead and purchased some round dies to finish up a project I'm now working on -- waiting for them to arrive at the moment. After learning this new info, I figured I'd better not push my luck any further! 🤣 Thanks for the great information!

Born and raised in Vegas, been through Ely maybe a hundred times and never knew this existed. Gonna have to stop and take a ride on the train next time I go through. Thanks for posting this. And that machine shop is actually a bit more interesting (GASP!) then the Starrett tool factory. But both are just awesome and I'm jealous of the people that get to work around all those historic and fascinating pieces of machinery.
